Title : Marriage, Concubinage, and the Law [The author analyzes the meaning of concubinage in the Middle Ages with some references to ancient Roman practices. In the later Middle Ages "concubine" came to have two separate meanings: 1) A woman who lived with a man in a domestic arrangement but was not married to him and 2) In a more technical sense "concubine" was used as a legal term for a status that accorded some rights but was inferior to that of wives. Includes a detailed look at a 15th century legal opinion as to whether a priest's concubine and son could receive legacies from the cleric. The suit was brought by the chief heir, the priest's brother. Title note supplied by Feminae.]

Title : Respondet Waltherus Byrth...: Walter Brut in Debate on Women Priests [John Wycliff's ideas on grace could be used to argue that any good Christian, male or female, was capable of preaching and administering the sacraments. The Welsh Lollard Walter Brut is represented in episcopal records as arguing that women could administer baptism and other sacraments, but he was ambivalent about women celebrating the eucharist. The bishop of Hereford's theologians turned Walter's comments into a discussion of the ordination of women, defending the ability of any priest, even one fallen from grace, to confect the sacrament; but a woman in a state of grace could not. A man's soul was supposed to be different from a woman's and, therefore, able to receive the priestly character in ordination. Title note supplied by Feminae.].

Murray identifies two compensatory strategies. Clergy saw themselves as possessing sexual potency because they struggled for celibacy. Moreover they wed the language of military prowess in their battle for celibacy. Title note supplied by Feminae.]

Arnold identifies four different tropes in overcoming sexual temptations including divine intervention to remove the male saint's desire. Title : Masculinity, Reform, and Clerical Culture: Narratives of Episcopal Holiness in the Gregorian Era [The author examines two versions of the "Life" of Saint Ulrich to trace the differences in the representation of masculinity, both clerical and lay. Miller argues that the proponents of the Gregorian Reform tried to establish a priestly hypermasculinity (untouched by female impurity and removed from familial entanglements) that separated the clergy from the male laity and justifed their special authority. Furthermore this competition between clerics and lay men strengthened the misogynist discourse in that era. Title note supplied by Feminae.].

When clerics set up households, they often created quasi-families either with blood nephews or with promising young men whom they treated as their sons. Title note supplied by Feminae.].

Title : The Bishop as Bridegroom: Marital Imagery and Clerical Celibacy in the Eleventh and Early Twelfth Centuries [The author argues that reformers used the longstanding image of the bishop as a bridegroom of his church to combat problems of lay investiture, simony, and episcopal elections. In instances of clerical celibacy, the bridegroom allegory complicated matters. Nevertheless, it was not entirely eliminated from the debate. McLaughlin suggests this is an indication of the importance of the bridegroom metaphor to the reformist program. Title note supplied by Feminae.].

Title : The Clerical Gaze [The author examines misogyny in clerical literature through the verse and prose writings of three prelates of twelfth century France: Marbod of Rennes, Hildebert of Lavardin, and Geoffrey of Vendome. In the eleventh century, churchmen thought about women in terms of an antithesis between Eve (who represented the sinful and deceptive nature of women) and the Virgin Mary (who represented the unattainable ideal of the virtuous woman). During the twelfth century, the distinctions between Eve and Mary became even starker, and Mary Magdalene (the repentant prostitute) became a figure who took a position between the two extremes. For male clerics as well as female worshippers, Mary Magdalene represented a way for the sinful woman to gain redemption. Title note supplied by Feminae.].
