The scarcity of affective motherhood in the Old Norse world as evidenced in family sagas and the laws is explained by the phenomena of infanticide, fostering, and illegitimacy. Following a woman's biological career, the evidence is analyzed according to the sex of the offspring, and the question is asked whether affective motherhood was introduced by Christianty.
