Franciscan observants had petitioned the pope for an opinion, and he had charged a committe to respond. (Two versions of the report written in Latin are presented as appendices to the article.) The expert committee included Antoninus, archbishop of Florence, and his text, "De ornatu mulierum," Izbicki demonstrates, was originally written to accompany their opinion.
