  • Title: Eleanor of Aquitane and the Quarrel Over Medieval Women's Power [Third article in a roundtable entitled "Re-presenting Eleanor of Aquitaine." The author addresses the historiography of women in the Middle Ages, arguing that since medieval survey courses are often taught in two parts, the periodization distorts women's history. Berman urges historians to do more archival work, particularly in monastic sources where the careers of postmenopausal women who exercised power and authority are more apparent.
