Title:
Antoninus of Florence and the Dominican Witch Theorists
Source:
Memorie Domenicane 42, ( 2012): Pages 347 - 361.
Description:
Antoninus of Florence wrote extensively about superstition, an excess of religiosity, and the belief in magic. The archbishop was very concerned about the illicit practices of learned men, but he distinguished theses from the observation of nature’s processes, which permitted predictions of such phenomena as floods. However, Antoninus was less credulous about fears that “witches” might be in league with the devil, dismissing much of this as delusion. Later writers, like the authors of the
Malleus Maleficarum
, used his writings but abandoned his more cautious attitude toward accusations of witchcraft.
