Title:
Wedding Scene (?)
Creator:
Lo Scheggia (Giovanni di Ser Giovanni), painter
Description:
Although this object typically is identified as a wedding chest (often referred to as the Adimari
cassone
), its size suggests that it was part of a
spalliera
[wall paneling at shoulder height above the backrest of a piece of furniture]. There is no evidence that it was painted for the Adimari family, either (this attribution was put forward in an eighteenth-century source). The scene here, which is painted on the central section of the panel, possibly depicts a wedding celebration. To the far left musicians play horns with banners displaying the fleur-de-lis. The octagonal Florence Baptistery is visible in the background.
