Title:
Annunciation to Saint Anne
Creator:
Giotto di Bondone, painter
Description:
An angel enters through a window to tell Anne that she will miraculously conceive a child, Mary. The enclosed domestic setting creates an intimate scene that demonstrates the growing interest in—and devotion to—the mother of the Virgin. Anne’s cult honored her large family and connections to her daughter and grandson. Controversies over Mary’s immaculate conception during this era served to focus more attention on Anne with her miraculous pregnancy through divine intervention.
