Title:
Adam and Eve
Creator:
Hugo van der Goes, painter
Description:
Left panel of diptych. Right panel (not depicted) shows Lamentation. Eve, having eaten from the tree, reaches for another fruit for expectant Adam as the female-headed serpent looks on. The iris hiding Eve’s genitals and the roses to Adam’s left carry Marian symbolism. The scene depicts the “necessary sin” of humanity through Eve while alluding to Christ’s redemptive sacrifice, made possible through Mary.
