Title:
Saint Hedwig of Silesia with Duke Ludwig of Legnica and Brieg and Duchess Agnés
Creator:
Description:
Standing before a throne, St. Hedwig holds an ivory statuette of the Virgin and Child to her chest and carries a small prayer book. The pair of boots draped over her arm symbolize her going barefoot in imitation of Christ's apostles, but her lace-trimmed robe affirms her status as a member of the aristocracy. The manuscript's patrons, descendants of Hedwig, kneel beneath small canopies to either side of the saint.
