  • Abstract: This study explores the meaning of suffering, divine and human, as this developed in Julian of Norwich's "Revelation of Love." Of particular importance is the manner in which Julian's visionary text opens the ascetic vocation to all Christians. Suffering is both the means by which God enters into human experience, and the manner in which humans move beyond imitation to participation in the divine reality. The text thus functions as an invitation, not simply to see what Julian saw but to engage the 'deep world' of that vision through a proper understanding and 'performance' of suffering.
