Carved rock crystal, with top and bottom mountings of precious gold and jewels. The author suggests that the vase was made in Iran between the third and seventh centuries C.E. The decorative Illustrations: Two photographs and one map. Plate One is a photo of the Eleanor vase. Plate Two is a close-up of an elder of the Apocalypse holding a vase similar to the one under discussion. The sculpture comes from the central portal of the West Facade of the abbey church of Saint-Denis. The map shows early twelfth century cities in Aquitaine and Saragossa.
