Painted Sources for Female Piety in Medieval Byzantium [the author analyzes the depictions of female saints in Byzantine churches in order to deduce the roles that women played in the Church; women prayed for fertility and healthy children in chapels decorated with paintings of Saint Anne, and they mourned the dead in narthexes decorated with portraits of female saints].
