Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Maria Maddalena Portinari
  • Creator: Memling, Hans, painter
  • Description: Maria Maddalena Portinari wears a hennin, an elaborate necklace and a dress with a fur collar. She presses her hands together in prayer and faces to the left. This panel and its pendant which depicted Tommaso Portinari originally flanked an image of the Virgin and Child (now lost), in a portable triptych. After the death of Maria and Thomas the triptych passed to their son, Francesco di Tommaso Portinari, who bequeathed it to the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence, which had been founded by family ancestors.
