Title:
Portrait of a Woman
Creator:
Ghirlandaio, Domenico, painter
Description:
A young woman sits in three-quarter profile in a broad landscape. She rests a hand on a surface before her that is covered with an eastern-style carpet, and she holds an orange blossom--a flower typically worn by brides. Scholars believe the sitter to be Giovanna Albizzi, wife of Lorenzo Tornabuoni. This painting likely was a marriage or engagement portrait. A woman would sit for a portrait for two events in her life: to mark her engagement or to commemorate her wedding.
