Title : Women and Lollardy: A Reassessment [The author examines the role of women in the Lollard movement (a heretical sect in medieval England) by focusing on a Lollard community in fifteenth-century East Anglia. Members of this community believed that women as well as men could become preachers; they held that marriage was a private affair that did not need solemnization in church; and many social factors, such as the influence of one’s immediate social circle, compelled both men and women to join the movement. The author explores the court records of two female Lollards, Hawise Mone and Margery Baxter, and shows them to be assertive and daring women.
