  • Abstract: This essay surveys both the external and internal developments that have shaped work on late medieval and early modern English aristocratic women in the last century. Feminism and the position of women have played a crucial role in determining the level of interest in and interpretations of the subject. The development of related fields such as family history, feminist theory, and women’s studies has also profoundly affected the evolution of the field and current work on it.
