  • Title: Where Should We Be Going with Medieval Women and Gender? [In this review essay the author considers the current state of medieval women's history in general and as reflected in two new books (Mavis E. Mate, "Daughters, Wives, and Widows after the Black Death" (Boydell, 1998) and Barbara A. Hanawalt, "Of Good and Ill Repute: Gender and Social Control in Medieval England" (Oxford University Press, 1998)). Phillips finds the books disappointing, arguing that one of the books does not tackle important questions while the other sometimes skips the hard archival research necessary for her topics.
