  • Abstract: This article addresses the multifaceted relationship between women and political power on the Italian peninsula during the emergence, flourishing and struggles of local powers, both communes and principalities. Natal and marital ties, widowhood, regency, intercession, patronage, and ritual were some of the devices by which women in this era of political changeability helped to forge political alliances, and ruled, represented, and influenced ruling bodies.
