Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Gonfalone of Corciano / Madonna della misericordia [Madonna of Mercy]
  • Creator: Bonfigli, Benedetto, painter, or school
  • Description: This processional banner, or gonfalone, was commissioned following an outbreak of plague. Above a depiction of the walled city of Corciano, God the Father rains down arrows, symbolic of the plague. The Virgin blocks them from the faithful with her mantle. On the left St. Augustine presents the men of the town (including Augustinian friars). The women are presented on the right by St. Sebastian, who has taken many plague arrows into his own body.
