Title: Vision of St. Bridget

Description: This panel illustrates the Nativity as related in the vision of St. Bridget of Sweden. While on pilgrimage in Bethlehem in 1373, St. Bridget had a vision in which the Virgin revealed that she bore Jesus without any suffering. Here the Virgin and Christ Child are encapsulated in separate mandorlas and are haloed. Mary kneels before her son and presses her hands together in prayer. Joseph stands to the right, without a mandorla but haloed so as to indicate his slightly lower status. He crosses his arms over his chest and bows. The Godhead appears above in the company of the angelic hosts, and one angel rouses the slumbering shepherds in the background. St. Bridget appears to the right, placed slightly outside of the scene so as to emphasize its visionary quality. She kneels in prayer and holds prayer beads.
