Description:
The time for the harvest, according to the Labors of the Months. Two female haymakers work with a rake and a pitchfork in the foreground while three men cut grass with scythes. The scene takes place along the Seine. In the background the sprawling building has been identified as the Hotel de Nesle, the duke's residence in Paris. The Sainte-Chapelle appears to the far right. The portrayal of the peasants working diligently reinforces contemporary social norms concerning the role of the peasantry. Above, Apollo directs his chariot between the symbols of Gemini and Cancer.
