  • Abstract: Amie de Gaveston served as a damsel of the queen's chamber under Queen Philippa, wife of Edward III of England, between 1332 and 1340. Although one piece of contemporary documentary evidence strongly supports the contention that she is the daughter of Piers Gaveston, earl of Cornwall and royal favorite under Edward II, there is no evidence to support the supposition that she was the legitimate daughter of Gaveston and his aristocratic wife, Margaret de Clare. This article seeks to prove that Amie de Gaveston was the illegitimate daughter of Piers Gaveston, and that those few facts we know about her life are in fact typical of what we might expect from a damsel of the queen's chamber, a fairly low-level position at court.
