From Epic to Romance: Gender and Sexuality in the "Roman d’Enéas" [The author argues that the "Roman d’Enéas" represents a major ideological shift from epic to romance. Here the male hero is foregrounded at the expense of the group, and his bonds with other males are now mediated by women compliant to patriarchal values. The homophobic sentiments expressed by some of the characters spring from the underlying homosocial desire present throughout the romance.
