Title : The Legitimacy of St. Edith [The author argues that Edith, daughter of King Edgar, figured in the political struggles to establish a successor to her father. The question of Edith's legitimacy raised by Edgar's widow, Queen Ælfthryth, favored the queen's two sons, Æthelred and Edmund, over Edgar's earlier children, Edward the Martyr and his half-sister Edith. The material that established Edith's credentials as a princess was turned into proof of her sanctity (and her role as Wilton's protector) after her death between 984 and 987.
