Title:
Christine de Pizan and the "menu peuple" [The author examines the representation of the poor and laboring classes in four of Christine de Pizan's texts. The purposes of the texts, the audiences addressed, and the characterizations of the "menu peuple" vary, but in each case Christine serves as an intercessor on behalf of the suffering and the weak. Furthermore, she does not hesitate to point out the responsibilities of rulers and the unjust treatment of the lower classes including prostitutes and the destitute. Title note supplied by Feminae.].
