  • Description: This text recounts the miraculous healing of a young girl whom the author, Bishop Bernard Gui, states as having lethargy, phrensy and mania and melancholia. The girl herself attributes her cure to the intervention of Thomas Aquinas to whose grave she came. In a vision she saw the saint defend her "held bound up" by a demon described as a Black man. The editor and translator notes that demons were frequently represented as being black and sometimes had racialized iconography stereotyping people from sub-Saharan Africa.
