Title:
The Fall and The Lamentation of Christ
Creator:
Van der Goes, Hugo, painter
Description:
This image is a diptych contrasting the fall of man on the left with the lamentation of Christ on the right. In the left side of the image, Adam and Eve are depicted in Paradise, surrounded by rich greenery and a cloudless sky. Additionally, from an artistic perspective, the detailed work in the oil painting is quite striking, as you can see the leaves in the Garden of Eden are all individually painted. As Adam and Eve stand in the garden, nude, with careless expressions on their faces, a serpent with the face of a child peaks behind the tree and is talking to Eve. The left part of the image shows that Eve has already given in to temptation, as she gently holds an apple in one hand as she grabs for a second with the other.
