  • Abstract: The alleged portrait of Mary of Burgundy, portrayed by an anonymous artist as Saint Mary Magdalene, in the collection of the Musée Condé at Chantilly, in fact is a portrait of her daughter, Margaret of Austria. Its painter, the Master of the Legend of the Magdalene, had already painted an earlier portrait of Margaret for the King of England. The same jewel is worn in both paintings. The portrait from Chantilly is therefore a depiction of Margaret of Austria as Mary Magdalene – a portrait historié that perfectly matches Margaret’s predilection for being portrayed as a model female saint.
