  • Title: Camera picta (Camera degli sposi): Ludovico Gonzaga, his Family and Court
  • Creator: Mantegna, Andrea
  • Description: Marquis Ludovico II Gonzaga commissioned Mantegna to decorate the walls of the camera picta in his castle in Mantua. Here on the north wall Ludovico and his wife, Barbara of Brandenburg, sit on a terrace surrounded by children, courtiers, and a pet dog. Barbara, a princess from the German Hohenzollern, brought prestige to the Gonzagas and shrewdly arranged marriages and inheritances for her many children. The well-dressed female dwarf is a member of Barbara's household, and the young woman behind her is likely a daughter-in-law. The mural emphasizes Ludovico's success with the luxurious scene, rich clothing, high-status wife, many children, and the grave conversation he is holding with his secretary.
