Title:
Coronation of Virgin and Christ as Man of Sorrows with Last Judgment
Creator:
Description:
The left wing of this diptych represents the Coronation of the Virgin. Mary sits before the enthroned and crowned Christ. She receives her crown from an angel above. Below this scene is a procession of saved souls into heaven. Among them are a tonsured monk, a king, and a pope. In the right wing Christ appears as the Man of Sorrows. His side wound is apparent, and angels flank him bearing the nails, spear, and the Cross itself. The Virgin and John the Evangelist kneel before Christ to intercede for the souls of the dead, such as those that appear in the scene below. Here, the dead rise from their graves at the trumpet blasts of two angels above. In a separate compartment two demons throw the souls of the damned into the hellmouth. The size and subject of the diptych suggest that it was intended for private devotion.
