Title:
Death of St. Monica
Creator:
Gozzoli, Benozzo, painter
Description:
From the St. Augustine Cycle, which narrates moments of the “Confessions.” Monica prays on her deathbed and her soul (depicted as an infant) rises to heaven where we see Monica glorified among angels. A woman and child sit in the foreground between Augustine, on the left, and his friends Alypius and Evodius on the right. In the background on the right, one can see St. Augustine’s departure for Carthage. In the upper left hand corner, Monica and Augustine look out of a window, having the mystical vision that Augustine mentions in his text.
