Title:
Madonna Enthroned/Ognissanti Madonna
Creator:
Giotto di Bondone, painter
Description:
The Virgin sits on a golden throne with the Christ Child on her lap. The image has strong Eucharistic overtones in which the Virgin's body is the tabernacle that holds the Body of Christ: the arched and pinnacled superstructure of the throne resembles a Eucharistic tabernacle. Two angels flank the throne, the one on the left presenting a crown and the one on the right holding a pyx. Two angels in the foreground bear vases of lilies and roses, symbols of both Mary's virginity and of Christ's Passion. The Christ Child raises his right hand in benediction. In his left he holds a scroll, perhaps symbolizing the Old Testament prophecies that his Passion was thought to have fulfilled.
