Title:
Superbia (Pride)
Creator:
Bosch, Hieronymus, painter
Description:
Rather than employing the traditional depictions of the Seven Deadly Sins, the artist chooses to represent the sins as they occur in contemporary everyday life. Here a demon wearing a kerchief holds up a mirror for a woman who smiles at herself and adjusts her own kerchief. An open box of jewels sits on the floor, further indicating the woman’s pride in her appearance. Through the doorway to the right, the young man looking at himself in a handmirror suggests that it is not only women who are prey to the sin of pride.
