Title:
Feast of Herod, detail: Salome Receives the Head of John the Baptist
Creator:
Description:
This image is the earliest extant representation of the beheading of John the Baptist. It conforms closely to the accompanying text from the Gospel of Matthew: "And his head was brought in a charger and was given to the damsel; and she brought it to her mother." To the left amid his feast guests a reclining Herod points to Salome, who receives the head of John the Baptist in the charger.
