Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Men's Bath
  • Creator:
  • Description: A counterpart to Dürer's drawing of a women's bathouse. This work demonstrates the artist's talent at depicting the classically-inspired male nude. There is not as much variation in poses here as there is in Dürer's depiction of female forms, yet Dürer does showcase his ability to render naturalistic musculature, particularly in the figure playing the flute. As a visual pun, the spout strategically placed in front of one man's groin area is topped with a rooster or "cock".
