Title:
Nastagio degli Onesti (part 3)
Creator:
Botticelli, Sandro, painter
Description:
This work, and the two additional panels that accompanied it, served as part of a spalliera, narratives painted on furniture. The panel relates a tale from Boccaccio's Decamerón. Nastagio, a youth from Ravenna, is rejected by his lover. While walking in the woods and contemplating suicide, he sees the spirits of two lovers who are condemned: the man (who committed suicide over his lover's rejection) must forever chase his lover and cut out her heart after watching her torn apart by wild dogs. This scene depicts two difference episodes from the tale: Nastagio plans an outdoor banquet so that his lover might see the result of rejecting a man's advances. In the left and center areas, the guests witness the spirits. In the right background we see that this spectacle has convinced Nastagio's beloved to accept his offer of marriage. The couple has exited the tent in the background and Nastagio's new bride holds his arm.
