Title:
St. George and the Dragon
Creator:
Uccello, Paolo, painter
Description:
The account of St. George and the dragon was brought to medieval Europe by Crusaders returning from the east. According to the Golden Legend, the event occurred in a town in Libya where a dragon inhabited a lake. The king’s daughter was selected for sacrifice to the monster. George passes through the town and reaches the lake, where he saves the princess by seriously wounding the dragon. He then places the princess’s girdle around the dragon’s neck and it becomes tame. Here the moments at which the dragon is wounded and girdled are conflated in one scene. A storm gathers behind St. George.
