Title:
Holy Kinship
Creator:
Master of the Ortenberg Altar
Description:
The cult of St. Anne and the Holy Kinship expressed an interest in the lives of Christ and the Virgin as well as the rising status of marriage and motherhood, which by the late fifteenth centurywere viewed as compatible with sainthood. Here the artist illustrates Anne’s trinubium (three marriages), discussed in the Golden Legend. The image shows Anne accompanied by her daughters Mary Salome, Mary Cleophas and Mary the mother of Christ and their children. The Virgin sits in the upper center with St. Anne to the left and St. Elizabeth with John the Baptist to the right. St. Joseph is excluded from the seated ensemble but stands behind Mary and Anne. Mary Cleophas sits with her four sons to the far left. St. Servatius, a fourth-century bishop of Maastricht and supposedly a distant relation of Christ, sits to the far right. Below from left to right are Mary Salome with her two sons, St. Agnes, St. Barbara, and St. Dorothy.
