Title:
Fall of Humanity and Expulsion from Eden
Creator:
Herman, Jean, and Paul de Limbourg, painters
Description:
The simultaneous illustration of the Fall and Expulsion from Eden is contained within a circular area. A fountain in the form of a Gothic tabernacle sits at the center of the garden. The narrative runs counterclockwise: the serpent, which has the upper body of a woman, offers Eve the forbidden fruit. Eve offers it to Adam and God the Father discovers the couple’s transgression. Adam points to Eve to assign the blame to her. A seraph escorts Adam and Eve out of Eden through a Gothic entryway that resembles a church portal.
