An illustration of the hierarchy of marriage, widowhood, and virginity from a manuscript of the "Speculum Virginum," a twelfth-century educational treatise created for female religious by Konrad of Hirsau. In the top-most register young virgins reap more than the widows in the register below them, and the widows in turn reap more than the married couples in the bottom-most register.
