Title:
Margaret of Austria
Creator:
Hey, Jean, painter (also known as Master of Moulins)
Description:
This portrait depicts Margaret of Austria at ten years old. The pendant she wears shows a pelican piercing its breast to feed its young, which seerves as a symbol of Christ's sacrifice and, more broadly, a symbol of Christian charity. The pendant, together with the prayer beads she holds, testify to Margaret's piety. The portrait was the left wing of a diptych; the right wing is now lost.
