Title:
The Controversy over the Immaculate Conception in Medieval and Renaissance Art, Literature, and Society [The belief that Mary was freed from original sin had taken root by the late twelfth century. One figure. Figure One Manuscript illumination of a pregnant Saint Anne with rays of light entering her womb, from a Book of Hours (known as the "Da Costa Hours") by Simon Bening, Bruges, circa 1515 (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, MS 399, fol. 351 v). Mayberry notes that the illustration supports the maculist interpretation for Mary's cleansing after conception, while the inscription in the border carries an immaculist sentiment.
