Title:
Women and the First Crusade: Prostitutes or Pilgrims? [The author examines contemporary accounts of the First Crusade and argues that large numbers of women went to Jerusalem. Kostick suggests that there were a variety of motivations depending in part on social status. A later version of this essay appears in Kostick's "The Social Structure of the First Crusade." Brill, 2008. Chaper 9, pages 271-285. Title note supplied by Feminae.]
