Title:
The Poetics of (Non)Conversion: The "Vida de Santa Maria Egipciaca" and "La Celestina" [The author reads Fernando de Rojas' story of Celestina, an aged ex-prostitute, against the conventions of hagiographic romance. The author argues that female prostitute-saints were popular in medieval Spain, and the cult of Saint Mary of Egypt was particularly strong. Although there is no direct connection between the "Vida de Santa Maria Egipciaca" (a poem about Saint Mary of Egypt) and "La Celestina," the author argues that Rojas intentionally subverts the literary conventions used in other texts about prosititute-saints. In contrast to what medieval readers might expect, Celestina never undergoes a religious conversion. Title note supplied by Feminae.].
