L'auteur de la "Chanson de sainte Foy, " probablement composée dans les années 1060-1070, appartenait au monde aristocratique; formé par l'école abbatiale de Conques, il destinait son poème à un public pyrénéen, mais sa langue était celle du Rouergue, peut-être celle du Larzac. Premier témoignage vraiment original de la littérature d'oc, son oeuvre confirme deux vérités paradoxales: la précocité de la féodalité méridionale, et les origines partiellement occitanes de l'épopée française.
