Title:
Chaucer's Pardoner on the Couch: Psyche and Clio in Medieval Literary Studies [the author argues that psycholanalytic theory has been abandoned by psychology and medicine while at the same time medieval literary historians have adopted it with great enthusiasm; the author takes the "Pardoner's Prologue" and "Tale" as a case study and suggests that the castration and homosexuality frequently seen as the key elements in the Pardoner's character were intended by Chaucer to be read metaphorically as indications of the Pardoner's barrenness and false religious beliefs].
