This is an attempt to read the cult of the Virgin against those of other saints, exploring similarities and differences in the ways in which the cults developed and by whom, and to demonstrate that the cult of Mary functioned as a symbol of solidarity and corporate unity in the Benedictine reform period. This ideal did not last long, however, and its breakdown is mirrored in a movement towards local cults.
