Abstract:
Diverse though they are, narrative lays raise the issue of the relationship between man and woman. The anonymous lay of "Guingamor" just as much as any other. So as to base historically an actual understanding of the story, narrative motifs in this text and in closely related texts have been compared to show that the lay is structured by the oppositions between places, time-schemes, games and amusements, and moral values. These can be related to the opposition between the sexes. In that light, the terror caused by Guingamor's unquestionably uncanny adventure demonstrates the anxiety which woman's desire arouses in man.
