  • Description: The physician Jaume Roig composed this misogynist advice poem in Valencian Catalan. In it he warns men of the many dangers women pose. Instead men should devote themselves to the Virgin Mary thereby ensuring their happiness and health. The Mirror (or Spill in Catalan) is made up of four books. Book One describes the narrator's experiences with women as a young man. Book Two discusses the narrator's three marriages (to a maiden, a Beguine, and a widow) along with additional instances of women's faults, particularly sexual infidelity. In Book Three King Solomon cites Biblical examples of women's faults. In the final book the first narrator, now an old man of 100 years, describes his satisfaction with a life of contemplation.
