  • Title: Codex Aureus of Echternach. Treasure Binding
  • Creator:
  • Description: This cover for the so-called Codex aureus [Golden Book] of the Abbey of Echternach is segmented by a cross saltire and a crux gemmata [jeweled cross]. Each of the four segments at the top and bottom depicts a symbol of one of the four evangelists and a personification of one of the four rivers of paradise. In the upper left and right compartments are the Virgin and St. Peter, respectively. Below these images in the same compartments are depictions of St. Willibrord (left) and St. Boniface (right). The compartments below these contain images of St. Benedict (left) and St. Ludger (right). Below these figures are representations of Emperor Otto III (left) and his mother, Empress Theophano (right). Theophano served as her son's regent after the death of her husband, Otto II, in 983. The carved ivory scene at the center of the binding is a later work of the 11th century.
